Project Description

In order to reinforce the success of the Department of Education’s Aadarsh program, which developed one model K-12 school in every Gram Panchayat, the Department has launched the Utkrisht Yogana. However, many rural primary schools lack electricity connections, and some are located in remote desert or tribal areas where electricity connections are hard to come by. A functioning electricity connection is a baseline requirement for 21st century schools - help us provide them to all children.

Project Outcomes

Un-Crowd Classrooms. When schools have too few classrooms for the number of students, classrooms become too crowded, making it difficult for students to learn due to discomfort, lack of seating/furniture, and potentially increased rowdiness. Grade-Appropriate Instruction. In primary school with fewer than five classrooms, classes are forced to share space. As a result, students have less time to receive grade-appropriate instruction. However, when each grade has its own classroom, students will be taught at grade-appropriate levels for the entire school day.

Project Need

Across the state, nearly 600 rural primary schools lack electricity connections; in some districts, up to 80% of Utkrisht Primary Schools are not connected to the grid. In addition, many schools face challenges in paying for electricity even after being connected. By providing these schools with solar power, we decrease the cost of rural grid connections and ensure that schools can sustainably pay for electricity moving forward. Without electrified schools, schoolchildren cannot access the pre-requisites of a 21st century, nor are teachers able to utilize projectors, smartboards, computers, or even internet-connected phones as teaching aids. In fact, without electricity - such basic amenities such as water filters, telephones, and fans are unavailble, reducing comfort for students and posting attractiveness for teachers.

Implementation Plan

Studies show that electrification and the internet-connected technologies they enable can contribute to improved teaching and school performance, with less absenteeism and higher enrolment amongst other potential benefits.
