Project Description

In order to reinforce the success of the Department of Education’s Aadarsh program, which developed one model K-12 school in every Gram Panchayat, the Department has launched the Utkrisht Yogana.


In order to ensure the success of the Utkrisht Yogana as quickly as possible, the Department of Education is tapping into multiple sources of revenue by enabling the convergence of schemes and seeking individual contributions.


On average, each classroom costs Rs. 7 lakh to construct.

Project Outcomes

Un-Crowd Classrooms :


When schools have too few classrooms for the number of students, classrooms become too crowded, making it difficult for students to learn due to discomfort, lack of seating/furniture, and potentially increased rowdiness.

Grade-Appropriate Instruction:


In primary school with fewer than five classrooms, classes are forced to share space. As a result, students have less time to receive grade-appropriate instruction. However, when each grade has its own classroom, students will be taught at grade-appropriate levels for the entire school day.

Project Need

Currnetly, the majority of Utkrisht Schools do not have sufficient classrooms to accommodate each class. This challenge is compounded by reverse migration of children from private to government schools, as measured by increases in enrolment and data from the latest ASER report on rural schoolchildren. Utkrisht Schools are divided into two types - Primary Schools (PS), which teach children in classes 1-5, and Upper Primary Schools (UPS), which teach children in classes 1-8. 153 Utkrisht Primary Schools require 1 additional room; 317 Utkrisht Primary Schools require 2 additional rooms; and 443 Utkrisht Primary Schools require 3 additional rooms. Meanwhile, the majority of Utkrisht Schools are Upper Primary Schools. 1,150 UPS Utkrisht schools require 1 additional classroom; 1,962 UPS Utkrisht Schools require 2 additional classrooms; 1,845 Utkrisht Schools require 3 additional classrooms; 1,207 UPS Utkrisht schools require 4 additional classrooms; 562 UPS Utkrisht Schools require 5 additional classrooms; and 181 Utkrisht Schools require 6 additional classrooms.
