You can provide help provide students in every primary school classroom with a library with books for kids at every reading level.

Project Description

Children’s reading abilities vary significantly, even within the same class. Accordingly, it is imperative to provide books appropriate to the reading levels of students at different levels in order to encourage reading among all students. This project will place small libraries in classroom in high-priority schools across the state. Each library will include between 110 and 150 books at a variety of different reading levels both in Hindi and English, with a majority of books (approximately 75%) being in Hindi. These libraries will be directly placed in classrooms, rather than in a separate room, ensuring that students have easy access to the libraries and books.

Project Outcomes

• Improvement in reading level of children across baseline skill levels as a result of increased access to and promotion of enjoyable and non-required reading material. • Increase in interest in reading among children who are below grade level in reading ability by providing books of all levels and eliminating any stigma at reading “easier” books. • Spill-over increase in academic achievement as children become more academically interested and improve Hindi and English reading skills.

Project Need

Across the state, only a minority of schools have libraries, and most of the books in these libraries are aimed at proficient readers. This project will provide small libraries in primary school classrooms, ensuring that young children are exposed to books of their reading level every day. Moreover, these are the two districts with the least economic dynamism in the state (measured by number of taxpayers with annual turnover of over 1.5 crore), and therefore are in need of targeted support from the state. Project Case Study

Research has proved that merely providing a library like atmosphere often encourages children to spend more time on learning to read, reading more and loving to read. Younger children would love to read simply written and colourfully illustrated books. Older children need exposure to a wide variety of high-quality books on varied topics.
